Contralateral breast symmetrization

The second stage of breast reconstruction is breast symmetrization, to harmonize the volume and shape of both breasts.

3 to 5% of occult cancers are discovered during this stage of symmetrization. Preoperative mammography and histological examination of glandular-cutaneous excision should be systematic.

If the reconstructed breast is of satisfactory shape and volume, no symmetrization is required on the contralateral breast, as a slight asymmetry is preferable to new scars.

The techniques used vary depending on the volume and ptosis of the contralateral breast, and technique of breast reconstruction.

If the healthy breast is larger than the reconstructed breast, a breast reduction is performed.

If the healthy breast is more sagging (breast ptosis) than the reconstructed breast, a mastopexy or breast lift is recommended.

If the healthy breast is smaller than the reconstructed breast, a breast augmentation with implants, with or without skin lift, is necessary.
