This is the last stage of breast reconstruction, when both breasts are of satisfactory volume and shape, after around three months.
The areola can be rebuilt either by a tattoo or by skin grafting.
The skin graft may be taken from the contralateral areola during symmetrization, or in the inguinal fold, close to the labia majora, as the skin of this area almost has the same color of the areola. It is often required to tattoo the graft and sometimes the healthy areola to harmonize the color of both areolas.
The nipple can be reconstructed by graft of the half of the contralateral nipple or by a local skin flap.
