Toxine Botulique Type A

Relaxes the face and does not freeze expressions…

Definition and objectives

Vistabel®, or Botox Cosmetic® previously known as Botox®, or Azzalure®, which is the aesthetic equivalent of Dysport® smoothens out facial lines and does not freeze the facial expressions. Botulinum Toxin A has relaxing effects on the muscles, and is used to release muscular tension, thus making the face look younger.

Used for decades in neurology and ophthalmology, the injection of this toxin is currently the most popular cosmetic procedure performed. However, this toxin has certain contraindications and drug interactions which should not be overlooked.

Procedure

The use of this toxin in accordance with sound professional practice can reduce muscular contraction of the face, responsible for dynamic wrinkles and aging, without paralyzing the face.

These injections can treat the forehead, the glabellar complex (lion’s wrinkles), the periorbital area (crow’s feet, orbital hypertrophy), the nose, the peribuccal area and the chin area, the neck (platysmal bands) and the neckline (improvement of skin texture). The eyebrows can also be reshaped to give eyes a “feline look”. Botulinum toxin is also used to treat excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) of the hands, armpits and feet.

The injection, performed in a medical practice, causes slight discomfort but does not affect the immediate resuming of activities, except intensive physical effort. The effects will stabilize in 10 to 15 days, and retouching may be necessary.

The toxin is effective for an average of 6 months (ranging from 3 to 9 months), after which the injection should be repeated. The muscle will retrieve its function when treatment is ceased, as the toxin’s effect is fully reversible.
